Join us on this extraordinary adventure! ## Position Description We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Image Analyst and Software Engineer to provide software engineering, database management, computer systems support, and engineering imagery analysis capabilities to the Engineering Photographic Analysis (EPA) Team at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing specialized software applications, databases, websites, and supporting computer systems used in engineering imagery analysis for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) Program.
This position requires a technically versatile professional with strong software engineering capabilities, experience maintaining complex technical applications, and an interest in applying those capabilities to engineering-imagery processing and analysis.
The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain the reliability, functionality, and continued development of the EPA team's software applications, databases, and supporting technical infrastructure. The candidate must be capable of independently troubleshooting existing systems, resolving technical issues, and implementing enhancements that support evolving engineering requirements.
The candidate will work collaboratively with NASA engineers, imagery analysts, software developers, and other technical specialists to support the processing and evaluation of imagery collected during ground testing, launch operations, and flight.
These activities contribute to the identification, characterization, and documentation of significant engineering events and potential anomalies in support of vehicle performance assessments, mission assurance, and crew and vehicle safety.
Although software engineering and computer systems support represent the primary responsibilities, the candidate will also support and participate in engineering imagery analysis activities, including post-launch reviews of SLS ascent imagery.
The ideal candidate will possess strong software development and problem-solving abilities, sound technical judgment, and the versatility to support both established software systems and evolving imagery analysis requirements within a multidisciplinary engineering environment. ## Software Engineering and Application Development - Design, develop, maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance custom software applications, tools, and libraries supporting engineering imagery analysis. - Maintain the operational reliability and functionality of existing software applications and implement improvements to address evolving technical requirements. - Develop and maintain specialized image processing applications for video playback, stabilization, image alignment, perspective correction, distortion modeling, image enhancement, and motion analysis. - Develop, troubleshoot, and maintain desktop applications, web-based applications, websites, software services, and application programming interfaces (APIs). - Evaluate existing software capabilities, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement solutions that enhance reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational effectiveness. - Maintain and modernize legacy software applications and supporting technologies while preserving critical engineering analysis capabilities. - Evaluate emerging software technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools, for potential application to software development and imagery analysis while maintaining appropriate technical validation and independent engineering judgment. ## Database Administration and Computer Systems Support - Design, develop, administer, and maintain relational databases supporting imagery analysis, metadata management, engineering assessments, and reporting. - Develop and maintain database structures, tables, relationships, queries, user permissions, and supporting documentation. - Configure, deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain servers supporting databases, websites, software services, and API endpoints. - Investigate and resolve software, database, and computer system issues to ensure continuity of critical engineering analysis capabilities. - Develop queries, compile statistics, and generate technical reports supporting engineering analysis, application performance, and database usage. - Maintain software requirements, database definitions, interface specifications, configuration documentation, and data management procedures. - Support the integration and interoperability of imagery analysis applications, databases, and associated engineering systems. ## Engineering Imagery Processing and Analysis - Develop and apply software tools and image processing techniques to support engineering analysis of still imagery, video, film, and high-speed digital imagery. - Process, manipulate, enhance, stabilize, align, and correlate imagery collected from multiple camera systems. - Support the evaluation of camera characteristics, image orientation, lens parameters, image timing, metadata, and other technical factors affecting imagery interpretation. - Assist imagery analysts in identifying, classifying, characterizing, and documenting significant engineering events, anomalies, and vehicle behavior. - Support the correlation of imagery timing and observations with other engineering data sources. - Participate in post-launch reviews of SLS ascent imagery to support engineering assessments, anomaly investigations, and crew and vehicle safety. - Prepare or contribute to technical assessments, analysis products, and reports documenting engineering observations and findings. ## Technical Collaboration and Documentation - Collaborate with imagery analysts, engineers, software developers, and technical stakeholders to identify requirements and develop effective software solutions. - Investigate complex technical problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement practical, sustainable solutions. - Develop and maintain software documentation, technical procedures, interface definitions, requirements, and configuration records. - Communicate technical findings, recommendations, and engineering assessments through written reports, presentations, and technical discussions. - Support knowledge transfer, process improvements, and technical continuity of critical engineering imagery analysis capabilities. - Work independently and collaboratively to prioritize software maintenance, technical problem resolution, and new development activities. ## Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or closely related technical discipline is required.
