Questions about cleared space jobs

Which space jobs require a security clearance?

Right now 592 open roles at the space employers we track name a clearance level in their own posting: 268 TS/SCI, 256 Top Secret, 68 Secret. They are mostly national security space work: satellites, ground systems and launch for defense and intelligence customers. Employers with such a role open include Rocket Lab, Quindar, True Anomaly, Voyager Technologies.

What is the difference between Secret, Top Secret and TS/SCI?

They are levels of access to classified information, each with a deeper background investigation. TS/SCI adds access to Sensitive Compartmented Information on top of Top Secret. Our guide to ITAR, export controls and security clearances in space jobs explains each level, who can hold one and how long it takes.

Do I need a clearance before I apply?

Each posting says what it requires, and some say the employer will sponsor the clearance for the right person. Only US citizens can hold a US security clearance, and many other space roles are export-controlled (ITAR or EAR) and open only to US persons. The guide explains both.

How is this list made?

We read each employer's own job board every hour and keep each posting's text. A role is listed here when its posting names a clearance level; a posting that mentions a clearance without naming a level, and roles read from a listing only, are left out. The live job board has every open role.
