Where the open roles are

The employers with the most roles whose posting states no US-person limit, and the share of each one's roles that leaves it out. Every role we read at SpaceX, Rocket Lab, K2 Space, True Anomaly, Astranis, Muon Space and 11 more carries a US-person limit. 110 of the roles listed here (marked in the table) instead exclude citizens of, or people born in, the countries NASA designates unless they are US citizens or permanent residents.

Can non-US citizens work in the space industry?

Yes, though less of the market is open to them than most people expect. Of the 8,051 open space roles whose postings we read today, 1,653 (21%) state no US-citizenship or export-control limit, and 536 of those are outside the United States. The rest say the work is export-controlled or needs a US citizen; our research on who can apply breaks that down by employer and kind of work.

Can a non-US citizen work at SpaceX?

Not on its open roles today: every one of the 2,258 SpaceX postings we read limits the role to US citizens or US persons (citizens, green card holders, refugees and asylees), which export rules such as ITAR require. Some of these postings add that a candidate who can obtain the needed export authorization may apply. SpaceX's page shows its open roles.

Can a non-US citizen work at Blue Origin?

Some of its roles are open: 17 of the 1,443 Blue Origin postings we read today (1%) state no US-citizenship or export-control limit. Blue Origin's page shows all its open roles.

Which space companies hire people who are not US citizens?

The employers with the most open roles whose posting states no US-person limit today are Relativity Space (376), AST SpaceMobile (224), ICEYE (171), Vast (169), Isar Aerospace (130). Employers outside the United States, and the software, data and business roles of satellite operators, are the usual openings.

What does ITAR mean for someone who is not a US citizen?

ITAR and the EAR are US export rules. Work on controlled rocket, spacecraft and satellite technology may only be shared with US persons (US citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees and asylees) unless the employer obtains a license. Many space employers therefore limit every role to US persons; a green card holder counts as one, a visa holder does not. How is this list made?

We read each employer's own job board every hour and keep each posting's text. A role is listed here when its text names neither a US-citizenship requirement nor US export control; a posting that instead excludes citizens of NASA-designated countries is listed and counted apart. That is what the posting says, not a promise: an employer can still require US-person status for a role without writing it, so read the posting before you apply. Roles from boards we read without posting text are left out. The live job board has every open role.
