Questions about space internships

When do space companies hire interns?

Mostly months ahead of the term. Of the 46 internships and co-ops open today, 17 name Summer 2027, 2 name Spring 2027 and 27 name no season. Summer internships are usually posted in the fall before and filled over the winter, so apply as soon as the season you want appears. Our research on starter roles follows the seasons as employers open them.

Are space internships paid?

The ones that state pay are. 21 of the 46 open internships state a rate, and the median is $27.98/hr, with typical pay from $26.97/hr to $40.19/hr (about 58,000 dollars as a full-time year). Rates are higher in engineering and software than in business roles.

Which space companies offer the most internships?

Today: Rocket Lab (7), Lockheed Martin (6), Thales Alenia Space (5), Blue Origin (4), The Aerospace Corporation (3). 15 more employers have at least one open.

Do space internships require US citizenship?

Many do. Rocket, spacecraft and satellite work is often export-controlled under ITAR or the EAR, so most US space employers limit their internships, like their other roles, to US citizens or US persons (citizens, green card holders, refugees and asylees). Each posting says so in its own text; our research on who can apply measures how many roles each employer limits, and the roles whose posting sets no such limit are listed apart.

How is this list made?

We read each employer's own job board every hour. A role is listed here when its title names an internship, an intern or a co-op, by the same rule as our page of every role for someone starting out, which also lists apprenticeships, new graduate and entry-level roles, and names the profession by the same rule as the page for systems engineers. Pay is what each posting states, as an hourly rate.
