NASA Internships

NASA runs two internship programs: OSTEM Internships, paid short-term projects for college-level students at its centers, and Pathways Internships, federal internships that prepare students for a career at NASA and can be converted into full-time civil service roles. Its Office of STEM Engagement reaches more than 2,000 students a year.

What participants do

Interns work on agency projects with the guidance of NASA mentors. OSTEM sessions run 10 weeks in summer and 15 weeks in fall and spring, three sessions a year; Pathways interns rotate through several assignments over at least 12 weeks.

How people get in

OSTEM applications go through NASA STEM Gateway (stemgateway.nasa.gov), where one profile applies to several projects across centers. The Summer 2027 deadline is 1 March 2027 and the Fall 2027 deadline 24 May 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET). Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18 or older, with a 3.0 GPA, and enrolled in a certificate or degree program. Pathways roles are posted on USAJOBS.

What it pays

NASA says the majority of interns receive a paid stipend award, based on academic level and session duration. It does not publish the amounts.
