NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Internships

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed by Caltech in Pasadena, runs its own internships for undergraduate and graduate students: the JPL Summer Internship Program, the JPL Year-Round Internship Program and the JPL Visiting Student Research Program. Its internship page also lists NASA's agency-wide internships and Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

What participants do

Summer interns work full time, 40 hours a week, for 10 weeks, starting in May or June on the first business day of a week. Year-round internships run in any session, and a first internship lasts 10 weeks or more. Program coordinators match each applicant with a JPL mentor, and selected students are told by email.

How people get in

Apply online through JPL's student application. The Summer 2027 deadline is Friday 12 March 2027, 5 p.m. PDT; JPL recommends applying between October and February. Both programs take U.S. citizens and permanent residents in STEM degrees at accredited U.S. universities with a 3.0 GPA; foreign nationals apply through the Visiting Student Research Program.

What it pays

Both programs pay a monetary award: monthly in the summer program, weekly in the year-round program. JPL says award amounts vary and does not publish them; some programs add housing or travel allowances for students who live more than 50 miles from JPL.
